August 10, 2010 Book Talks, The Process 1 Comment
During the SCBWI LA summer conference (#LA10SCBWI), my agent held a soiree where I had the good fortune to meet Luciana Navarro Powell, a talented illustrator who was also a fan. When I told her I wrote Jingle the Brass, her reaction was effusive and surprising! “It’s my son’s favorite book!,” she said and went on to tell me that her husband plays the part of the engineer because he’s skinny, her son plays the part of the boy (of course!), and she plays Joe–the roly poly “ashcat”–fireman for all you non-railroading types. [Note: Luciana is tiny and nothing like Joe!]

The moment was indescribably delicious. To know that I had reached a reader and his family in that way. Another author/illustrator at the party said, “I wish one of my readers would greet me like that!”

My agent promplty gifted Luciana with Nugget on the Flight Deck, and here’s Luciana’s response [with her permission]: “It was so awesome to meet you in LA!…Thank you for the book, it is already on our reading pile and although some things are too complicated for Alex he loved it. We had the chance to walk around the [USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum] yesterday, so this is a picture of my boys and my mom. Alex is talking on the photo, he is explaining to me how the wire prevents the planes [from falling in] the water :)…When we were walking around the midway he kept saying: ‘Just like Nugget on the Deck! Just like Nugget on the Deck!'”
