LitLinks: The BEST lessons to celebrate Earth Day every day

December 29, 2021 LitLinks, LitLinks-Grade 3-5, LitLinks-Grade 6-8, LitLinks-Grade K-2 No Comments

BY PATRICIA NEWMAN

Happy 2022! We at LitLinks are beginning the new year with a message of POSITIVITY. A WE-CAN-DO-IT mentality to share with children of any age. An Earth Day Every Day message to celebrate in your home or classroom.

Environmental issues affect every aspect of our lives. But research shows we have a disconnect with nature. We face mounting ocean plastic and climate change emergencies. And children from marginalized families are disproportionately exposed to these negative effects.

However, a growing body of research tells us making connections to nature improves our health and defines our cultural identities.

The following children’s literature titles reconnect readers to nature. They show why nature is worth saving.

Get a head start with these Earth Day Every Day lessons

I’ve compiled three of LitLinks’ best Earth Day lessons in one post. Every lesson integrates science and language arts using a different children’s book. Additionally, these books provide the perfect launching point to UNDERSTAND the problem and develop SOLUTIONS that empower children to act on behalf of our planet. Empowering children helps them–and us–deal with our eco-anxiety.

Earth Day Every Day integrates STEM and language arts

The following lessons combine a rich understanding of our connections to the environment. And how our habits impact nature. Each lesson addresses a variety of STEM and language arts skills. Skills such as letter reading, writing, data collection, science communication, and observation. Additionally, you may scale each lesson to different developmental levels.

Lastly, I post new lessons to LitLinks every week. Please come back for future topics. If you have an idea for a LitLinks post, share it with me in the comments below.
