#LA11SCBWI: Inspiration from Day 3

August 8, 2011 The Process No Comments

From Gary Paulsen, author, on the librarian who gave him his first library card: “Everything I’ve become I owe to that woman and she never knew.”
“Reading became a way to breathe.”
Advice for kids on reading: “Read like a wolf eats. Read what they tell you not to. Read when they tell you not to.”

From Beverly Horowitz, VP & Publisher, Delacorte Press: “Listen hard when your editor talks to you about revisions.”
“When I’m working on your book, there’s only you. I love you the most.”
“Be knowledgeable about your own book beyond the writing of it.”

From Adam Silberberg, author and Sid Fleischman Humor Award winner:  “Writing takes inspiration , sweat, and tons of mint milanos.”

From Richard Peck, author: “Viewpoint is everything because the one voice our stories never need is ours.”
“Writing is trying to make a blank page speak in voices that are not ours.”
“Unless you find yourself on the page very early in life you will go looking for yourself in all the wrong places.”

From Krista Marino, editor Delacorte Press, on finding your YA voice:  “When you’re young everything feels like the end of the world.”

From Laurie Halse Anderson, author:  “Writing forces you to be alive and being alive can hurt!”
