Leukemia patient 1st Kids On KidLit winner #literacy #elemed #kidlit

October 7, 2011 Kids On KidLit No Comments

Earlier this week, I announced that Julia (age 8) was the debut winner of my new Kids On KidLit contest. I sent her a copy of When Life Gives You OJ by Erica S. Perl, a darling story about a girl who wants a dog so badly she’s willing to give her eccentric grandfather’s “practice dog” a try. Yesterday, I received the following note from her mother:

Ms. Newman: Thanks for the book. It just arrived. Julia is very excited. It is the perfect book for her. For about three years she begged us for a dog. We told her no because she has leukemia and her immune system was too weak. But a few months ago, after getting considerably better, she got her first dog. She can really relate to the character is this book who longs for a dog. Thanks so much, Maria

Connecting kids with books is the ultimate goal of Kids On KidLit. It’s working! Please spread the word.
