The other day my daughter thanked me for teaching her how to use the library. She said that in college many of her friends didn’t know how to find what they needed on the shelves for their research projects, relying instead on whatever Google coughed up. That amazed me and highlighted the wrong-headedness of the recent spate of librarian/media tech layoffs in California.
But I didn’t come by library research naturally. My elementary school librarian (whose name I am ashamed to admit I’ve forgotten) taught me about the Dewey Decimal System and how to find books I wanted to read. I want to thank that librarian because she gave me a life-long skill that I continue to use in my writing.
